A review of hip fractures (neck of femur and trochanteric) incidence across Europe over the last 10 years.

Welcome to the ProFaNE Work Package 2 website link to European hip fracture data representing incidence figures for the last 10 years. The data have been acquired from existing national data sources and we aim to provide comparative data over time for individual countries and differences in incidence rates between countries. The vagaries of routine data accuracy have been well rehearsed in the literature over the years and it has been a conscious decision on our behalf to use existing data sources.

Work Package 2 would like formally to thank Cate Barr (King's College Hospital) for her achievements in accessing this data and also our gratitude to the various national data sources (listed below) that have kindly shared this information.

More detailed statistical analysis will follow with submissions to peer reviewed journals. Work Package 2 would like to thank Soufiane Boufous from the University of New South Wales for his help with the data analysis.

Definition

Neck of femur fractures were classified as all fractures included under the ICD10 coding classification of S72.0.

Both sub and pertrochanteric fractures were included under 'trochanteric fractures' - incorporating both S72.1 & S72.2.

Where a country had changed from ICD9 coding to ICD10 coding during the 10-year period the corresponding ICD9 codes were used.

Study Population

The national populations were divided by gender and age bands of 60-69, 70-79 and 80+. Yearly population figures for each age and gender grouping allowed for the calculation of incidence and age-adjusted fracture rates per 100,000 of population.

Population figures were supplied by national statistical databases such as statistics.gov.uk or were supplied by the individual statisticians. In most cases the data were provided free of charge, but payment was required for England, Sweden, Austria, Netherlands, Norway and Denmark.

Data were sought for the rest of Europe but were unobtainable due to slow response time, data unavailability or prohibitive cost.

Along with total incidence and age adjusted hip fracture rates, total bed days per year, mean and median length of stay and 30 day mortality rates were collected.

Where possible data were collected for each year from 1992-2003. Due to coding changes and speed of database input complete data were not available for every country over a ten year period.

Web Pages

As there are a large number of web pages in this section a site map is available to help you find your way around. Also, at the top of each page you will find links to take you to each of the main sections including a return link to this page.

The data were collected from national databases via statisticians. It is acknowledged that these data may not be 100% accurate and that there may be some miscounting of cases due to multiple discharges per fracture. The relevant databases are listed here:
